Steacy was the wrong example

[ ED NOTE: Jesse Ferreras was kind enough to let me crosspost this item from his blog. You can read the original here. ]

Conservative MP Brent Rathgeber made a valiant effort yesterday to get answers out of Jennifer Lynch as she lied her way through testimony before the Parliamentary Justice and Human Rights Committee.

I admire his effort, but he didn’t quite have the punch I hoped for. His biggest mistake? Using Dean Steacy as an example of the CHRC’s malodorous ethics.

Now Steacy is no angel. He clearly hasn’t read the Charter of Rights and Freedoms because he believes freedom of speech is an American concept – or at least he feels that the CHRC puts “reasonable limits” on that right. Of course I disagree.

Yes, he engaged with a white supremacist group and wondered what he could do in order to put up flyers advocating their cause within his community. But overall he was the wrong example and Jennifer Lynch isn’t completely wrong in saying his posts were bland.

Rathgeber, should he get another opportunity, should really go after Richard Warman and his alternate personas as Pogue Mahone and Lucie. This is a guy who’s called Jewish cabinet ministers “scum” and referred to homosexuals as “sexual deviants.”

Lynch, claiming pride in her staff, denies she’s done anything wrong. That means she either doesn’t know what Richard Warman has done or she condones it.

Steacy’s a jerk – that’s clear. But the real target here should have been Warman.
